From Rags to Riches: Oscar's Story

It wasn't long ago when 2-year old Oscar the Australian Shepherd mix was rummaging trash cans for his next meal and running the streets of a New Mexico Indian Reservation. But today he was a television star on AZTV's Morning Scramble with show host Sandy Moss. Talk about a rags to riches story!

Oscar is ready for his close-up on AZTV's Morning Scramble!

When he was picked up off the streets, Oscar was brought to Blackhat Humane Society. They gave him medical treatment but Oscar had a skin infection that would take time to heal. Blackhat Humane Society specializes in rescuing the over 200,000 abandoned and stray animals on the Navajo Nation. They operate their rescue by the kindness of compassionate foster families and consistently deal with the tremendous problem of pet overpopulation.

Oscar's time-consuming treatment for his skin condition would mean occupying a foster home that might be able to help 2-3 other dogs that could get adopted during the length of his entire treatment. So they turned to Yavapai Humane Society (YHS) for help.

YHS operates a program called New Hope, which does just what it sounds like--provides new hope for homeless pets in shelters and rescues across Arizona. Our program coordinator Lisa heard Oscar's story and the great need for help at Blackhat Humane and helped transport him from New Mexico, to northern Arizona, to Prescott.

Oscar knows how to work his smile for the camera.

When Oscar arrived to YHS, everyone who met him fell in love. He is the sweetest, happiest dog. We treated his skin condition and were delighted to watch his irritated skin transform into soft, supple, no-longer-flakey skin over time.

Now we search for his forever home. He almost seemed to anticipate the fun field trip to the AZTV studio. Willingly jumping into the car, calmly relaxing into the crate for our drive, and happily greeting every new face at the station, we were surprised at how well he settled in!

The TV studio had a cooking demonstration for the following segment after YHS' and we wondered how Oscar would react to the smell of beef patties cooking that permeated every corner of the studio. He knew it was his time to shine, though, and he smiled at the camera with no reaction at all to the hamburgers on the grill.

This handsome guy won't last for long! Call our adoptions center at 928-445-2666 to set up a meet and greet with him.

Without the New Hope program, Oscar, and hundreds of other pets in need, would have never found his way to Prescott. The impact doesn't stop there. Without the program, Blackhat Humane Society also would have over-extended their valuable foster resources, having to forgo assisting other animals in need.

New Hope program coordinator Lisa arrives back from partner Blackhat Humane Society with puppy Mia who is now in her forever home.

This is truly a life-saving program through which hundreds of homeless pets each year are brought under the caring wings of the YHS No Kill Ethic. But it doesn't come cheap or easy.

The New Hope program needs a few things to keep running:

  1. An awesome team--like Lisa--who keeps networking with other organizations across the state (see the areas our New Hope program serves here)
  2. Great partners like Blackhat Humane Society who work with YHS to save lives
  3. Fuel--it takes a lot of gas to get us over the Arizona mountains
  4. A vehicle
That last one--our New Hope vehicle--is the part where YHS really needs your help right now. Our current vehicle is a donated minivan that we have been so grateful for over the years, but it's on its last legs. With nearly 200,000 miles on it, the minivan frequently breaks down on YHS staffer Lisa when she's in the middle of a transport--often in remote areas. That situation is less than ideal when you have a truck-load of animals with you.

So far YHS has raised almost all the necessary funds to purchase a new cargo van for the New Hope program. We are just $4,000 away. We need your help! Consider making a donation to help us continue this live-saving program and give new hope for pets in need. Every gift--small or large--makes a difference. www.gofundme.com/yhsvan
