Yavapai Humane Society (YHS) announces that its hours of operation open to the public will be extended, effective Sunday, January 4, 2015. The new hours of its Adoption Center (1625 Sundog Ranch Road, Prescott, Ariz.) will be 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., open seven days a week. The change is intended to allow adopters more time to visit the shelter to give a pet a second chance at a happy life.
Executive Director of the organization, Ed Boks, foresees significant potential for increasing adoptions with the extended hours of operation. “We are never at a shortage of animals at YHS, but we do find that adopters are often short of time. We did some benchmarking and found that we would be able to maintain effective operations and the highest quality of care for homeless animals while allowing adopters more opportunities to visit the shelter and adopt a pet. That’s really our mission—to give every animal its best chance.”

Extended hours will also be applied to YHS’ Lost & Found Pet Center (also located at 1625 Sundog Ranch Road, Prescott, Ariz.). The Center’s supervisor, Lori Richey, recognizes benefits not only for adoptions, but also in helping people reunite with their lost pets. “We know what a frightening experience losing your pet is for both the animal and the owner. Owners will no doubt appreciate the ability to come to the shelter every day of the week and after they get off work to search for their lost pet. It’s a celebration when we are able to reunite a lost pet with its owner and we always want to have more of those.
For people who find stray pets, we have always had a policy where we will take in and care for an animal in need even if our Lost & Found Center is technically closed. Our purpose is to protect the health, safety, and welfare of pets. We hope the community knows we are always here to help, and these extended hours send that message loud and clear.”
Boks explains that the new hours will not only help increase adoptions and reuniting people with their lost pets, but is a positive change from a human resources standpoint. “The cherry on top of the many benefits for our community is that the change truly benefits YHS staff. Our animal care technicians will be moving to a four-day-a-week schedule with ten hours each day, meaning they’ll get an extra day off to spend with their families. Our staff works very hard—they have tough jobs, and this will allow them to have more down time to rest, rejuvenate, and keep the passion they have for their jobs alive. It’s a win-win.”
