Ginger the Miracle Kitten Gets a New Lease on Life

Everyone knows how cute, curious, and cuddly kittens are. They deserve to be held and played with, fawned over and adored. But Ginger, a two-month-old tabby, was not dealt the good hand that every kitten deserves.

A good Samaritan rushed Ginger to the Yavapai Humane Society (YHS) after finding her on the side of the road in Prescott. It appears Ginger had been struck by a car. Her right front leg was paralyzed and it was clear she was blind.

In the majority of animal care communities, Ginger would have been a candidate for euthanasia. Thankfully, YHS rescues many severely injured or ill animals with the help of its STAR (Special Treatment and Recovery) Fund. STAR donations allow YHS to treat and rehabilitate many animals that would have been euthanized without medical attention.

The shelter’s clinic was able to reduce the swelling on Ginger’s brain, and to everyone’s excitement, her eyesight was fully restored. Her paralyzed leg had to be amputated, but it hasn't slowed her down a bit. Ginger is just like any other kitten; full of energy to play and full of love for snuggles.

The whole world seemed to fall in love with Ginger. Her photo was shared via social media and the community shared back its unabashed compassion. After she healed, Ginger was quickly swooped up by her new forever family. For them it was love at first sight.

Incredibly, Ginger’s journey doesn’t stop there. In December, her story was entered into Petco Foundation’s annual Holiday Wishes campaign and YHS was awarded $25,000 for the impact on animals in need it has in Yavapai County, illustrated by the life-saving treatment given to Ginger. A portion of this $25,000 grant from Petco Foundation was allocated to the STAR fund so that other pets can have a second chance at the happy life that they deserve.

Ginger would not be alive today without YHS’ STAR program. Unfortunately stories like hers are all too common and sometimes cannot celebrate such a happy ending. YHS sees hundreds of pets through its doors each year that are injured or sick and need life-saving medical treatment.

If you want to help other animals like Ginger, please consider making a lifesaving donation to the Yavapai Humane Society STAR program. Every gift makes a difference. See Ginger’s video and learn more information about STAR at www.yavapaihumane.org/star.
